Perspective!

As this blog is about money and is the main focus, I thought today was a great day to share an underlying fact of life. Money is NOT everything! It is not the most important thing ever and it needs to be put into perspective at times.

Today I spent a good part of the day sticking things into the front of our Wii trying to pull out Memory pieces. And, the whole time I was thinking...this was $200!!!!!!

Yes, it is true. I was in the kitchen cleaning up after breakfast ( my eldest had just got on the bus ) and I hear my 3 year old son say, "MOMMY...help! I can't get all in!"

He was VERY frustrated. I look over thinking I need to help him complete some childhood task and find him sticking Memory game pieces into the front.

To say I was upset is an understatement. I tried to grab as many out as I could, but frankly my hand is just not small enough to pull anything out of the front of that thing. Oh, NO! This is a $200 toy that was destroyed in moments.

I unplugged it and tried to stick things into it to pull out the pieces. Some came out, but let's just be clear.......many, many pieces are still missing inside the thing.

Next, I logged online and searched How to Take Apart a Wii. At this point, it isn't working anyway so I figured why not try to take it apart and get the pieces out? What is the worst that can happen...it won't work? It already doesn't!

What a chore!! I am about half way through and figure out that a few of the screws need a special tool that I will now need to go purchase.

Meanwhile, my 3 year old knew all day I was not happy with him. I don't know what clued him in? My distressed face, the fact I spend so much time trying to take the Wii apart or the fact that I kept asking him, "Why, Noah, WHY?"

He was so sweet, though. He usually cries if he gets in trouble ( I think because he then wants us to hug him and cuddle him ), but today...he kept trotting behind me everywhere saying, "Mommy, I sorry I hurt the Wii". And, it was stated in a very soft voice ( he is usually quite loud ). I couldn't help but give him a quick hug each time before I went back to dismantling our game console.

But then, I heard devastating news that stopped my day in it's tracks. While I am selfishly complaining and mumbling to myself about how bad my day is, I realize it isn't.

I had a great day! I had a day that other Mother's around the world would crave and pray they could have, too. Because, my kids were here with me. They were home and healthy and getting into mischief. What more does a Mother want?

There are Mother's out there dealing with unimaginable pain as they care of their sick children and even have to say goodbye to the child they cherish! And, today I got the news that a mother I know had to hold her 6 year old child and say goodbye as she went to be with the Lord this evening.

Tonight, I ask that you pray for Paige's family and continue to do so.

And, tomorrow I am not going to be so stressed out by a Wii. In fact, if the Wii is broken, a baseball comes through the window, or if Noah floods my bathroom and my kitchen ceiling starts leaking ( yes, this did happen, too )... I am going to keep it in perspective. It is meaningless in the scope of my life as a mother.

I watch that quick silly video I took of my mischievous Noah which I posted above, and I realize how much I love him. No matter what he does in life, that fact will never change...I love him without fail.

So....

Thank you, Lord, for another day with my children! Each day is a precious gift. Thank you for the broken Wii which means my son is being a typical 3 year old and above else........thank you for sacrificing your Son so that someday my children and I can be together with You forever.

Saving for College - Every little bit Counts! $1,473 Impact for my Family

If you have children like I do, I am sure you are already thinking ahead to the unbelievable expenses once they reach college age. With three kids, my husband and I have made sure we began setting money aside as soon as they were born.

At first, it was a very small amount for our first son. But as our careers progressed, we increased the amount invested for their education. By doing this, we are slowly saving for them bit by bit. Plus, the money is invested in programs/funds that are earning us money each month.

I recently received our 1st quarter statements for the kid's 529 accounts. Here is how much money we earned per child Jan-Mar:

  • Child 1 - $443.84
  • Child 2 - $515.01
  • Child 3 - $515.01
Total Earned = $1,473.86

The nice aspect, these earnings will not be taxable by the IRS next year. Once the kids go to college, we can then withdraw the money to pay and will not be taxed at that time, either, if used for their education.

And, don't forget we are also investing our own money into these accounts. So, combine our contributions with the earnings I mentioned above and we are one step closer to our goals.

If you can't tell by now, these 529 plans set up to help families save for college expenses while receiving a federal tax advantage. This means your money will grow faster. On top of that, most accounts are offered via states and some will then offer state tax advantages, too.

Although you will want to read the details for the 529 you select, some standard rules usually do apply.
  • Invest money and it will grow tax deferred. Some states also offer a state tax incentive for their 529s
  • Can invest in a 529 in any state, whether you live there or not.
  • You can use your investment for any college in the U.S. and some abroad
  • Investments can be transferred to other family members. If my first child gets a full paid scholarship ( I can dream, right? ) I can use the money we invested for the next child or another family member.
  • If you invest in your state's 529, this does NOT mean they need to go to college in your state. The money you invest can be used for college in any state they choose.
If you have not started saving for your child's education, this could be a very good time to start. Look at your budget and see if there is any way for you to squeeze in a small extra amount.

Need some extra incentive? Remember, you can get a $25 Bonus with the current College Advantage 529 promotion going on here when you open your new account. You only need to invest $25 to get the bonus.

In addition, Libby at Thrivent is able to assist.

If you didn't get the chance to work with Libby previously, you can read here on how she saved my family and many of my readers on their life insurance. I had always thought life insurance through an employer was the most cost effective, but I was wrong.

Well, Libby can also assist with 529 accounts. If you want to open one but don't know how or where to invest your contributions, she has an account that you won't have to worry about selecting your own investments. There is a $20 a year fee for the service, but could be well worth it. Please contact Libby at libby.greiwe@thrivent.com or 513-239-2933. Please let her know Carrie at Money Saving Methods sent you her way! She will be able to help you out!

Would you like 20 Free Photo Announcements?

Kodak Gallery is giving away (2) 10 packs of select Photo Announcements for every member ( even if a current member ).

If you don't need baby announcements, a few of the selections are generic enough you can create your own photo cards. Since my youngest loves trains, I selected the above design to create Thank You cards for him for his next birthday. I got 10 of these.

Then, I created a thank you card for my daughter, too. So, I got 10 more of those.

There is no coupon code needed. Simply create a new account or log in here. Then, go under Special Offers to find the select cards. Remember, if you are new to Kodak Gallery you will also get 50 Free Prints.

I loaded to my cart and the $17.98 was deducted automatically. I paid only $2.98 in shipping for 20 photo cards. Great!

Earning with Gongos - Consumer Village

I wanted to touch on this company since I haven't talked about them lately. I just received my first payment from them this past week via a $5 Amazon gift card.

Why did I want to discuss?

Well, I was shocked when the gift code arrived. I had not requested a cash out ( with most companies, you usually cash out when you reach a threshold ) so I logged back in to research how this arrived.

Here is the gist.

With Consumer Village ( this is their nationwide portion of their company with smaller study opportunities ), you accumulate points as you participate in studies. Once you reach their first payment threshold, 500 tokens, you get $5 and a charity gets $.25. Your points still remain and once you reach the next threshold of 1,000 tokens you get another $5 for a total of $10 and a charity gets $.25 again. So, no need to redeem or remember to log in.

After you reach that threshold, you begin earning more. For example, the next threshold is 2,000 points, but instead of getting another $10, you actually get $15! Basically the longer you participate, the more you will earn.

I am also excited to report that Gongos sent a press release out last month announcing a Financial & Diversified division. They will now be conducting research in the banking and financial areas, with such companies as Visa and US Bank. I am looking forward to studies in this area.

If you still need to register with Gongos & Consumer Village, go here.

$20 off $20 - Spring Hill Nursery Flowers

Perfect timing for Mother's Day!

I posted this deal the last two years, and I am always happy to see it back. I love Spring Hill Nursery! And, I love my flower gardens, too. So, if I can get cheap or free flowers for my spring planting, I am all for that. I always tend to add some additional perenials to my garden when this deal comes around.

The flowers above ( a rose ground cover ) is what I purchased this year. I plan to plant it around my rock wall out front.

Please do note: plants you pick will be shipped at the appropriate time for their planting. So, you won't necessarily get your shipment next week. But, if you give them as a gift you can always put a picture of your purchase in a card for the Mom in your life.

Also, these plants do not look very healthy when you get them. They are small and often times just look like roots. But, I have been planting their flowers for almost 10 years, and they have always grown into gorgeous flowers. In fact, I split these flowers and have even give some to friends as mine grow to large.

If a plant doesn't make it, they have a lifetime guarantee.

  • Click here to go to Spring Hill Nursery via Shop at Home. You will get $5 sign on bonus plus 11% cash back via this Rebate Shopping Site.
  • Order $20 worth of products and the total will automatically come off when checking out. You can order less, but only the amount of your purchace price will come off.
  • Use coupon code 414217
  • You DO have to pay shipping. But, it is still a great deal! Shipping comes to $7.95 for orders up to $20 and any order over $20 to $40 is $9.95. ( If your shipping charge comes up different, call them to find out why before placing the order. There shipping fee is posted under customer service and then Shipping Rates, for your backup. )
  • Please keep copies of all receipts and save them. Two years ago, our receipt only showed the shipping, but when our credit cards came...they had charged us the full bill. This did NOT happen last year, but I still like to keep my receipts just in case. So, make sure to watch your credit card. I simply had to call Spring Hill, email them a copy of the lower bill, and they refunded the difference. See why it is important to keep all receipts?
  • Plant your new flowers!!
Happy Mother's Day
