I go in a store and buy a $10.99 product and spend 99 cents for it. Thus, my savings is $10.

With the newspaper, I got my newspaper subscription for $10.71 and got a $10 Kroger card ( as good as cash for me, since I shop there every week ). Thus, I paid 71 cents for my newspaper subscription which would have otherwise cost me $10.71. Thus...$10 savings ( plus all the extra coupons...woo, hoo! )

When calculating savings, it is always important to look at the value of something BUT also if it is something that you need or use anyway. Just like with my sale shopping, I always have my list with me so I know who I need to buy for during the year, the value we like to spend on them and I can then mark it off. Otherwise, you hit a good sale...and you will buy stuff you don't need. If I don't need it for someone on my list...no matter how good the sale...I don't buy it.

The same held true with the paper. This is an expense I have weekly, because I get the Sunday paper for coupons. So, to get the paper basically free for that time period is well worth it, since I would have been spending that money anyway on my original subscription.

Hope the explanation on how I track savings helps a bit.Carrie @ Moneysavingmethods.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03180111156666321863noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6220049951646758125.post-65181636711063332522008-12-25T18:53:00.000-05:002008-12-25T18:53:00.000-05:00Fuzzy math, how can you claim a $10 saving for the...Fuzzy math, how can you claim a $10 saving for the Kroger card, when you spent $10.71 on the subscription. I'm not sure what qualifies as a 'saving" in your mind.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6220049951646758125.post-79989872185500454402008-12-16T21:36:00.000-05:002008-12-16T21:36:00.000-05:00I've been trying for days but I can't get the $25 ...I've been trying for days but I can't get the $25 free blockbuster deal to work for me.
